Girls in Technology (GIT) provides opportunities for girls in grades 6-12 throughout the Washington D.C. Metro Region to explore and cultivate their interest in technology into a future career. Our vision is to significantly increase the number of girls, especially those in underserved communities, who can envision and achieve a path for education and career opportunities. Run by an all-volunteer committee of Women in Technology (WIT), GIT fulfills the classroom portion of the WIT mission of “advancing women from the classroom to the boardroom.”

GIT Programs

GIT programs reach 150+ girls annually to provide hands-on access to technology and tech challenges, presentations and mentoring from experienced female technology professionals, and scholarships for pursuing technology-related degrees. GIT offers in-person and virtual programs during the school year throughout the DC area.

GIT Mentor-Protégé (MP) Program – Grades 9 - 12

Mentor Protégé (MP) is our longest running program and connects girls with professional women mentors and like-minded girls, to identify pathways to careers in technology. MP members attend five evening sessions, each lasting approximately 90 minutes. The agenda typically includes networking, a speaker/panel experience and mentoring on topics such as Technology Career Explorations, A Passion for Technology, etc.

GIT.Connect Program – Grades 6 - 12 and Alumnae

The GIT.Connect Program expands exposure to technology topics of interest. These online sessions last approximately 90 minutes and typically include networking, discussion of relevant topics (women business owners, internships, career paths, etc.) and interactive exchanges between participants and presenters or Technology experiences. Recent programs have included Python Programming and Living and Working in Space.

Scholarships and Awards Program – Grades 6 - 12

The Scholarships and Awards Program provides GIT members an opportunity to win scholarships that will reduce the financial barriers to expanding their technology knowledge and training. Experience scholarships are available for girls in grades 6-11 and Higher Education Scholarships for girls in 12th grade. Scholarships are competitively awarded based on application submissions, essay responses, program engagement, and rubric-based judging results.
